Family Safaris

Zambia is very welcoming towards families and the guides are experienced with guiding multi-generational families. There are however, some restrictions that Zambia and its national parks have in place which is worth bearing in mind if you are considering a family safari to Zambia.

South Luangwa National Park

This national park offers, arguably, the best game viewing and guiding in all of Zambia, if not Africa. In terms of accommodation, the camps in South Luangwa are admittedly quite wild, with thatched walls and open-air bathrooms. For that reason, a good option for a family is to stay in a private house (such as Robin’s House) which offers a more relaxed safari experience – the game viewing is on a private basis, dinner is served on a private basis and ultimately, the safari timings and experience is outlined by the guests. For game viewing activities, it is also worth noting that there is a minimum age of 12 years for walking safaris in South Luangwa.

Lower Zambezi

The Lower Zambezi National Park is famed for its land and water based activities, offering a varied safari experience. That said, many of the activities are limited to children 12 years or above. Whilst some of the camps do accommodate younger children (e.g. Chiawa Camp accommodate 6+), the Lower Zambezi is quite adventurous in terms of the safari experience so we would advise families with older children to say here.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World so it is often included in a family holiday to Zambia, and rightly so! Victoria Falls is catered to thousands of tourists every year, including families and children. Aside from a mesmerizing visit to the falls itself, the area surrounding Victoria Falls offers a wealth of activities, including boat cruises, bungee jumping (of course there is a minimum age to this), canopy tours, white water rafting, zip wires, horse riding and many more! Entire days of activities can easily be arranged… while the parents take advantage of a quiet day by the pool!
