Review

The Africa Amini Maasai Lodge is run entirely by Maasai people from the local community and is truly one its kind in Tanzania, and all of Africa! Its location, between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru in Northern Tanzania, offers guests an indescribable sense of space and freedom, and with breath-taking 360 views from everywhere in the lodge, the emphasis here is all about slowing down the pace of life and enjoying space.

Location

The beauty of this lodge is that you’ll truly feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. The lodge sits in the middle of the Maasai steppe, in between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru in northern Tanzania, and its elevation provides breathtaking 360 degree views of both mountains when the clouds pass.

Layout

The lodge is very spacious, with its seven bungalows and lodge amenities spread out along the small hills. All of the buildings are built to replicate the shape and image of a traditional Maasai Boma (the houses the local community live in). Dining areas, a bar and a shop make up the main area, and outside, comfortable seating is offered for guests to enjoy the view of Africa’s highest mountain. A short walk away sits an inviting pool which glistens under the African sun. Surrounding it are comfortable sun-loungers, a shaded bar, a massage room and even a sauna… all with jaw-dropping views out to the horizon.

Rooms

The seven bungalows are designed as traditional Maasai Boma houses, but with the addition of modern amenities such as flushing toilets, hot running water, comfortable double or twin beds, and of course, stunning views available throughout the room. The rooms are decorated with colourful fabrics, replicating the Maasai clothing, and soft lighting and local artwork.

Community projects

The lodge itself was established by Africa Amini Alama, which is a registered charity in Tanzania, founded as a private initiative in 2009 by the Austrian Dr. Christine Wallner. Over the years, the charity has launched a variety of projects dedicated to education, healthcare, social care, tourism and agriculture, and each project encourages the local community to get involved, providing sustainable tourism… and the Amini Maasai Lodge (and its two sister properties) do exactly this. Whilst staying at the lodge, guests are encouraged to visit local projects and ask questions about the local community, tradition, welfare and rituals. It’s a learning process for everyone!
