Review

Meaning ‘circle’ in a dialect of Masai, ‘Entamanu’ seems a fitting name for a camp that sits on the rim of the rounded Ngorongoro Crater. Opening its doors in August 2016, Entamanu is one of the newest properties on the rim owned by Nomad's, and is sat on the remote northwestern rim of the crater. Sleeping a maximum of 16 people, the camp offers that intimate and peaceful feel that other larger properties on the crater do not.

Location

Entamanu is perched on the northwestern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, with views into the crater seen from every room, and incredible views of the Serengeti seen from the other side of the camp. It sits within the conservation area and is a only 30 minute drive from the descent road that leads you into the crater.

Layout

The camp and its six tents are sat on raised wooden platforms, each overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater. The main area is completely cosy - with a tented lounge and dining room warmed by a log fire and soft blankets. There are two family tents which are built on one level, with two bedrooms sharing a bathroom. The other four tents are en-suite double or twin tents.

Rooms

The rooms are canvassed tents, sat on raised platforms overlooking the crater. When building the camp, there was, and still is, a focus to keep things sustainable. Furniture and interiors are sustainably sourced wood, and artwork seen throughout the camp is all made by local Tanzanian artists.

Activities

- Game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater are a big highlight! Early starts- where you will be woken by a hot cup of tea or coffee- are recommended so that you can enjoy the crater before it gets too busy. Entamanu also offers guided walks around the rim of the crater and in the surrounding highlands, guided by a local Maasai to explain the way of life, the role of medicinal plants and Maasai beliefs. These walks need to be pre-booked but are perfect for a slower pace activity.
