Review

Another of the Bushcamp Company properties is Bilimungwe, an intimate and stylish camp with a rustic and authentic safari feel to it. The reason that this camp, along with Chindeni, is one of the favourites of The Bushcamp Company is because of its location. Permanent waterholes and lagoons in front of the camp attract resident hippos and large families of elephant that come to bath in the mud on a regular basis. With award-winning resident guides, guests staying at this camp could not be in better hands during their stay…

Location

Bilimungwe Bushcamp is located in the southern sector of the South Luangwa National Park. The camp has three waterholes and the Luangwa River on its doorstep. One waterhole is occupied by Harry the hippo, who has made Bilmungwe Camp his home since he was a young hippo. The waterhole and lagoon also attract large families of elephant and other wildlife (impala, puku, warthog, kudo and baboons) to come and drink or bath on a regular basis. This is truly unique to Bilimungwe!

Layout

The main area at Bilimungwe features a lounge with comfortable seating area and dining area, all sitting on a raised wooden decking and under a thatched structure. This cosy lounge area overlooks the waterhole that Harry the hippo calls his home. The rooms are positioned either side of the main area and spread out to ensure privacy and serenity.

Rooms

Bilimungwe Bushcamp is made of four thatched chalet rooms, designed for comfort, with an authentic safari feel to them. The room features everything you would need – comfortable queen or king beds (twin beds can be arranged), an open-air shower and a private deck. The rooms are decorated with bright African colours and textiles, which complement the dark wood furnishings.

Activities

The team of guides at Bilimungwe Camp are very good indeed, and Manda, the award-winning resident guide, is a perfect example of that! Like the majority of camps in South Luangwa, walking safaris are particular popular in the morning, combined with an afternoon/ night game drive to finish the day off. The remote area is particularly good for its walking safaris, as the remote wilderness is home to a wealth of bird life and wildlife.
