Review

Imagine falling asleep under the open twinkle of the African sky, hearing echoes of roars and wild animals around you... This is exactly what you get at Loisaba Starbeds. On top of the coolest beds you will ever sleep in, each room gets a personal Samburu warrior, dressed in their colourful traditional wear and beads, to look after you and wheel you out under the stars at night. Because of this, it is no surprise why its one of Kenya's most quirky and memorable properties yet!

Location

On top of a rocky kopje in northern Laikipia, Loisaba Starbeds is definitely a memorable and adventurous way to enjoy the African bush. Although only a 15-minute drive from its sister property, Loisaba Tented Camp, Starbeds is completely self-sufficient as a camp and its location is prime as it overlooks a permanent waterhole which attracts a large number of game, as well as with excellent leopard sightings and an elephant migratory zone.

Layout

The main area has a cosy dining and lounge area, with a warm log fire as the perfect centrepiece for telling stories and having drinks together after a day out in the bush. As an extension, a wooden deck overlooking the view is used for evening sundowners and shared candle-lit dinners. The three en-suite starbed rooms and one family starbed room are spaced around the camp and each comes with a traditional Samburu warrior to host your stay and escort you to and from dinner when it’s dark.

Rooms

The ‘starbeds’ themselves are the talk of the town! Each room has a handcrafted four-poster wooden starbed, draped with a fine mosquito net. At night, a Samburu warrier will wheel the starbed out onto the open verandahh while guests are in them, to enjoy a night under the clear African sky, full of stars and whispers of wild animals.

Activities

Loisaba Starbeds offers game drives (day and night) and bush walks with knowledgeable Samburu guides. Horse riding, for experienced equestrians, camel riding, fishing, mountain biking and cultural visits to Samburu villages can be arranged, as well as a unique opportunity to spend a morning with the resident anti-poaching sniffer dogs as an additional activity.
