Review

Governors' Camp, in a nutshell, is all about its location, location, location. The camp, which was once reserved exclusively for Kenya’s colonial governors, hence the name, is today still one of the favourites in the Masai Mara. In the past, renowned photographers, documentists, and the BBC have come to base themselves in the camp whilst documenting the exceptional wildlife. Over the years, other camps have tried to compete, but ultimately, Governors' Camp will always be the best location for game… in arguably, all of Kenya!

Location

Sat inside the Masai Mara Reserve, Governors is a traditional camp snug in the forest by the banks of the Mara River. There is an abundance of game all year round, but during the months of July to October, the game is heightened as the Great Migration pass through these plains and cross the infamous Mara River.

Layout

The whole camp lies in the shaded forest, with 37 en-suite tents lining the riverbank. A spacious bar tent overlooking the Mara River is the main area of the camp, with tents sat either side. Breakfast and lunch are served under the warm African sun around the main bar on the open grasses. Dinner is served in a simple dining room with walls open to the Mara plains. Whilst dining, guests are often joined by some resident warthog!

Rooms

The tents are all en-suite, entirely canvased and lowly lit, enhancing the safari feel with basic and dark wooden furnishings. The tents either have views of the river, the forest or the plains. Governors' Camp offers a cosy safari experience, where a hot water is placed in your bed awaiting your return in the evening and a hot drink is brought to you in the morning to ease you into the early starts. Each room also has a private verandah which is the perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy an armchair safari!

Activities

The Governors' Camps combine the best locations, vehicles and guides to give the best game viewing experience in the world’s prime wildlife area. As an additional activity, the Governors' Camps also offer their very own hot air balloon rides, which take off from the plains behind the camp. Taking off just before the sunrise, the balloon carefully hugs the meandering banks of the Mara River, with exceptional views over the Mara plains, the escarpment and the Serengeti in Tanzania.
