The African golden monkey, is a dazzling primate found only in the misty highland forests of the Virunga Mountains. Weighing around 4–7 kg (9 – 15lbs) and measuring up to 60 cm (2 ft), these monkeys are known for their vibrant golden-orange backs and expressive faces. Their limited range and striking appearance make them one of East Africa’s most captivating and rare wildlife treasures.
Golden monkeys are highly social and live in troops of 30–100 individuals. They thrive in bamboo forests, feeding on bamboo shoots, fruits, leaves, and occasionally insects. Agile and playful, they leap effortlessly through the canopy and communicate with chirps and squeals. Their daily routine includes foraging, grooming, and resting in the treetops, making them a joy to observe during guided treks.
In East Africa, golden monkeys are best seen in Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. These parks offer habituated troops for close-up encounters.
