What to See

Humpback Whale

[ Megaptera novaeangliae ]

Ocean’s acrobat with a song to share.

As the sun rises over the Indian Ocean, a colossal shadow breaks the surface. The humpback whale — singer of the seas and traveller of continents — launches skyward in a breathtaking display. In this moment, the ocean whispers its ancient secrets through the rhythm of a breaching leviathan.

The African humpback whale is a majestic marine mammal known for its acrobatic breaches and haunting songs. Reaching lengths of up to 16 metres (52 ft) and weighing as much as 30 tons, these gentle giants migrate thousands of kilometres annually. They favour tropical coastal waters for breeding — including East Africa’s warm Indian Ocean — and are often spotted near coral reefs and protected marine zones.

Humpbacks are baleen whales, feeding primarily on krill and small fish by filtering them through comb-like plates in their mouths. They are highly social, often travelling in pods and communicating through complex vocalisations. Their migration from polar feeding grounds to tropical breeding areas is one of nature’s great journeys — a spectacle of endurance, grace and instinct. Calves are born in shallow waters and stay close to their mothers for protection.

In East Africa, humpback whales are best seen off the coast of Kenya or around the southern Tanzanian island of Mafia, particularly near Watamu and Malindi. Watamu Marine National Park and Watamu Marine Association offer conservation-focused excursions.
