Review

Tena Tena has long been a safari favourite in South Luangwa National Park and as the original Robin Pope Safari Camp, it is clear why! With simple safari tents and open-air bathrooms, the accommodation at Tena Tena is authentic and makes you feel completely at one with nature.

Location

Tena Tena is situated south of the exclusive Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa National Park. It is sandwiched between the Luangwa River and a lagoon system – a magnet for all types of wildlife, especially in the dry season. This area has resident lion prides which regularly cross the river to occupy both sides of the park.

Layout

Tena Tena is made of six tents that are spread out across the banks of the Luangwa River. The main mess area is a large canvassed tent featuring a range of comfortable seating which are cleverly made out of old tree stumps. Dinner is served al fresco, on the banks of the Luangwa whilst a scout is on lookout – an idyllic location under the starry African sky.

Rooms

The six canvassed tents are well spaced out along the river bank and offer authentic safari accommodation. The rooms are designed to combine privacy with the open feel of being in the bush – the tents are curved around the trees and the bathroom is open so small frogs and insects make themselves at home.

Activities

Wildlife around Tena Tena is reliable and undisturbed, and the game activities on offer highlight this. Guests can do day and night game drives and walking safaris, led by an experienced guide from Tena Tena, and a scout from the national park. Tena Tena also offer activities that are less focused on the wildlife, such as village tours, and excursions to nearby charitable projects - Wildlife Education Centre and the Tribal Textiles).

Fantastic area for game, just outside the Nsefu Sector

The bathrooms are open-air which may not be for everyone
