Review

Ol Malo Lodge is perched on the edge of the escarpment with breathtakingly vast views extending over the plains of the Laikipia Plateau. Ol Malo homes three generations of the Francombe family, who are genuine hosts, full of charm, enthusiasm and exquisite local knowledge. It’s a place of character and fun, and the real emphasis is on its wealth of safari activities.

Location

Ol Malo Lodge is set on a private ranch in the northern province of Laikipia. Its position on top of an impressive cliff top provides the most spectacular backdrop of the escarpment and the vast plateau. The area is proud to have a number of resident game, with the opportunity to also see less familiar species, such as the grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffes and Somali ostriches.

Layout

Past the enticing infinity pool, the central area of Ol Malo Lodge homes a comfortable, open dining and lounge area, including a small library and a roaring fireplace for cooler evenings. Down from the main dining area, there are four beautifully crafted cottages, each with its own private verandah. They are well spread along a pathway shaped by dense bush and cacti, giving each cottage privacy, perfect for honeymooners and couples.

Rooms

Although each cottage is slightly different, the general design and décor was all influenced by the wild landscape and the local Samburu people… the real authentic African vibe. The cottages are all charming olive-wood en-suites, with a centrepiece bathtub and large picture windows to soak in both the bubbles and the views!

Activities

Ol Malo is very activity-based, and no wonder with a huge amount on offer, including camel riding, horse riding, game drives (both day and night), game walks, mountain biking, ranch life experiences and tubing. Ol Malo’s relationship with the local people also allows cultural visits to the villages and homes of the Samburu people to see their way of living. As additional activities, fly camping and helicopter rides, piloted by the Francombe’s son, Andrew, can be arranged for a memorable high!
