Whilst many would consider an African safari to be a very adventurous holiday, there are a couple of destinations in Africa that offer activities that are bound to boost your adrenaline. With options of horse riding, camel riding, mountain biking, hiking, tubing, cultural visits, helicopter rides, wildlife tracking, Victoria Falls, bungee jumping, microlight flights, kayaking, fishing and many more, the modern safari has come a long way from a standard game drive. These activities are offered in a few destinations across Africa and have proven particular popular for families and active travellers!

For those looking for the ultimate adventure in East Africa, then trekking through the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda in search of the endangered mountain gorillas is the perfect choice. Sharing around 96% of the same DNA as humans, gorillas are our closest relative. They are social, gentle and intelligent animals and it is said that observing them in the wild, truly shows this. There is something so special, yet quite daunting, about standing metres from a silverback weighing around 200kg! For more information, please see our specific Rwanda gorilla trekking page.

If you are keen on spending a night in the heart of the African wilderness, you could consider a night spent fly camping. The term fly camping can be used to describe a very lightweight camp used on mobile safaris and its ultimate goal is to bring people closer to nature than ever before. Sometimes fly camping can be as simple as a thin mattress and a mosquito net – giving you the ultimate sleeping under the stars feeling. Whilst the experience is made safe by the guides, it is one of the most exhilarating feelings ever… What can beat falling asleep under the star-lit sky, hearing roars and footsteps in the middle of the night, and waking up to the smell of fresh coffee in the middle of the untouched wilderness?
