As the newest camp to the Selous Game Reserve, Roho ya Selous, which is sat in the prime area for game opened in August last year. Owned by Asilia, we are confident that the camp will offer the quality of experience that its sister properties throughout Tanzania do. Its location is enough to tempt guests in, but its luxurious and beautifully-designed accommodation makes it competitive with other high-end properties in the Selous.

Location

Perched on a small hill overlooking the mighty Rufiji River, Roho ya Selous sits in the best area for wildlife in the park. Nearby, resident hippo and crocodile are hard and seen on a regular basis on Lake Manze and Lake Nzerakera. With only a 20 minute drive from the airstrip, the camps location makes it accessible for a variety of game viewing activities such as walking, boating and driving.

Layout

The main mess area of the camp homes a cosy lounge with a roaring fireplace taking centre stage for cooler evenings. For accommodation, Roho ya Selous will have eight canvassed, spacious tents which will be spread out along the thicket, perfect for embracing safari life and having your own privacy.

Rooms

As the name translates to the “the heart of the Selous”, the idea behind the design of the camp is to mix both indoor and outdoor living. The rooms all have running hot and cold water, an indoor and outdoor shower, and even air conditioning for the warmer months. Each of tents have a private, shady veranda to relax on at the end of an exciting day!

Activities

There is a wide variety of activities that Roho ya Selous offer and the beauty is that guests can ‘mix and match’ every day, from a choice of game drives, walking safaris and boating safaris. Guests can also combine a boat safari with an hour or so bit of catch and release fishing, and the rivers home good populations of tiger fish as well as catfish.

Feedback

Your suggestion of Selous park was perfect for the time we had as it was very private and so varied, we loved it. There are so many highlights it is hard to pick but particularly memorable was seeing an elephant family on our last day and spending an hour watching them drink and cool themselves down and a special honeymoon meal the camp set up for us in the evening. We were very impressed with Asilia safari company the people were lovely and accommodation was fantastic. It was also great to hear about their values, conservation and community work.

We especially wanted to travel in the green season to see the difference from the burnt dry landscapes . We knew it would be hotter and humid in February but were a little concerned that the wildlife would be difficult to see . It was certainly hot , especially in the Selous but we had no problems seeing wildlife which was very abundant . In the Selous we saw a huge pack of wild dogs( 27 ) with cubs twice , three separate prides of lions one with very young cubs , several breeding herds of elephants , buffalo and of course multiple Giraffes and Impala .

We stayed at Roho Ya Selous which is a new tented camp beside one of the lakes . The staff were excellent and our guide Penuel who stayed with us for the three days was very knowledgeable The tents are very well appointed with all round mesh and inner mosquito nets . You are very close to Hippos which provide a wake up call as they return from grazing in the early morning .

The cooling air above the beds was helpful for sleeping with the very high humidity at this time of year . The boat trips made for an interesting change from the vehicle Safari and we came across hardly any other vehicles when out on game drives.

We saw the wild dog pack again during our stay and also leopard walking through a wooded area on the way to the airstrip for the flight to Ruaha.

The Asilia Selous Camp safari was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !!!!!

Way above the previous 2 safaris I did in Kenya and Botswana with Cazenove & Loyd

It was a very good recommendation to go for the Selous park and not Serengeti; more natural, authentic, variety of landscape.

The managers,staff and guide felt nicer, less spoiled.

The camp was just perfect, simple, beautiful, exclusive, even these kinds words do not describe it well!
