For couples looking for that extra special trip, a luxury Africa honeymoon has so much to offer. Whether you’re looking for a game-filled safari, superb beaches, breathtaking landscapes, extraordinary animal experiences or vibrant culture, Africa has it all. On top of that, Africa homes some of the world’s most exclusive properties and camps, offering unique and untouched locations and exceptional service to add to the perfect honeymoon!

Due to the size and scope of destinations within Africa, the wealth of information can sometimes seem overwhelming. In this section, we have tried to simplify things and give you an overview of the types of things to consider before planning your Africa honeymoon.

Africa Honeymoon - Logistics

If you intend to travel to more than one country in Africa, then there are certain combinations which work better than others. For example, combining the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya is quite a complex routing because there is no open land border to cross through, so instead, we recommend that you focus your safari in one of the destinations. A popular destination to combine with a safari is Zanzibar, and with its own international airport, it is easy to add on to a Kenya, Tanzania or Rwanda itinerary. Combining multiple destinations and parks inside of a country is also very simple with the aid of internal flights. Each country has its own internal carrier (for example Coastal Aviation for Tanzania and Safari Link for Kenya), who will be able to fly you around the country in their very own Cessna Caravans.

Africa Honeymoon - Activities

Whilst the main activity that draws honeymooners to Africa is a safari, it is worth considering what sort of safari experience are you looking for and what you want to get out of your luxury African honeymoon. What activities do you want to do on safari? What landscapes do you want to be surrounded by? Are there any specific animals you want to see? We usually recommend that you spend a minimum of three nights in one camp before moving on, and this is so you can get to truly embrace the ambiance of the camp, the knowledgeable guides, the staff and the stunning surroundings. Aside from an African safari, there are many other activities on offer, ranging from fantastic diving and snorkeling destinations, stunning beaches, gorilla trekking and vibrant culture.

Africa Honeymoon - Timing

Sitting on or very close to the Equator, East Africa offers good conditions and comfortable year-round temperatures, so it’s hard to define a specific ‘best time to go’. That being said, the dry period between July and October is deemed the best time to go, offering exceptional safari and game viewing experiences. The period between April and May is the rainy season across East Africa and many of the camps and properties are closed or inaccessible so this is a period that we would not advise to travel in (although gorilla trekking in Rwanda is still feasible during this period). Walking thousands of miles across the plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya in clockwise direction are the Great Wildebeest herds. Their relatively predictable route and timing (although it can vary between years), allows us to estimate their position throughout the year, so if they are high on your list, please let us know and we will recommend which area of the Serengeti or the Mara to stay in to see them.

Africa Honeymoon - Camps

The camps and lodges across Africa are the height of luxury and offer honeymoon couples northing short of a luxurious and memorable stay. With so many to choose from, we have put together Our Top 10 Luxury African Safari Camps for honeymooners to give you a few initial ideas.

Africa Honeymoon - Budget

Probably one of the most important factors in any honeymoon trip, budget will determine how many places you can visit and the type of accommodation you go for. Apart from the cost of international and domestic flights which can be expensive, we believe Africa offers excellent value for money, especially in terms of the level of accommodation you can get! While luxury, no-expense spared options do exist, for those wanting to stick to a budget, there is also an abundance of good-quality camps and properties which offer exceptional value for money. The camps and lodges on safari can range greatly, selling anything between $300 to $1,300 per person per night. Initially this may seem quite high for a night’s accommodation, but this rate includes all of your meals, all of your game activities, park and concession fees and all transfers. There are two main types of accommodation to choose from whilst on safari – permanent camps or mobile tented camps. Permanent camps remain in the same place throughout the year, and so often have facilities such as swimming pools, libraries and more luxurious décor (chandeliers, free-standing baths etc.). This is the perfect choice for honeymooners looking for something beautifully special and more luxurious but for those keeping to a more specific budget, mobile tented camps are also a great option.

These mobile tented camps pack up and move every few months, following the position of the wildebeest herds throughout the year. Although the camps are more simplistic in terms of the accommodation, they are always in the prime location and the quality of guiding is often just as good as permanent camps. As we work directly with the properties and camps across Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda, we are regularly up to speed with their latest special offers and honeymoon packages. Hotels in Zanzibar are particularly good at offering honeymoon couples’ little extras so if you are after something special, please ask our recommendation! Whether it’s breakfast in bed, luxury private island trips, outdoor cinema showing, relaxing couple massages, or candlelit dinners on the beach, every little detail adds to shaping the most memorable honeymoon!

We strongly recommend the best starting point is a quick chat on the phone at some point so we can really get started in putting together your ideal trip! It is also worth noting that many of the camps and properties in Africa have recognized the honeymoon market and so have special offers that are geared to making the end price all that much better, so get in touch to see what is currently on offer! Give us a call or send us an email to get the ball rolling!
