What to See

Honey Badger

[ Mellivora capensis ]

Unstoppable scavenger with a fearless streak.

As twilight descends upon the African bush, a shadow scuttles through the undergrowth. The honey badger — fierce, cunning, and utterly undaunted — emerges in search of its next challenge. Whether raiding hives or confronting predators, it moves with fearless resolve, a true embodiment of nature’s raw tenacity.

The African honey badger is a stocky, fearless mammal found across sub-Saharan Africa. Measuring up to 77 cm (2½ ft) in length and weighing between 5–16 kg (11-35 lbs), it boasts loose skin and powerful claws. This tenacious creature thrives in diverse habitats, from dry savannas to forests and rocky hills, where it digs burrows and roams with unmatched confidence.

Honey badgers are omnivorous opportunists, feasting on everything from honey and bee larvae to snakes, rodents, and fruit. Their thick skin and aggressive nature allow them to take on venomous prey and even fend off lions. Mostly solitary and nocturnal, they are known for their intelligence and problem-solving skills — often raiding beehives or scavenging kills left by larger predators.

Honey badgers can be seen across Africa but, in the southern countries of Zambia and Botswana can them be seen more regularly than in the East African countries of Tanzania and Kenya.
