Sitting midway up the eastern coastline of Africa, Tanzania and the small islands that sit off its coastline offer some of the very best diving in the world. With season migrations of larger pelagics such as humpback whales and whale sharks there are plenty to interest even the most experienced of divers.
For those that are new to diving the exotic island of Zanzibar will give you some entry level and intermediate diving and snorkelling. For those that are looking to spend more than a few days in the water then the remote islands of Pemba and Mafia will definitely be worth considering.
Mozambique
Heading on down the coast from Tanzania is the coastal country of Mozambique. Unfortunately, currently the northern part of the coast is still unsafe to travel to but the southern islands known as the Bazaruto Archipelago are still, very much, open for business and offer some very good quality diving. Often combined with the southern safari countries of Botswana and Zambia, the price of many of the properties down here is significantly more than those in Tanzania but it is hard to quantify the price for havcing an idyllic white sand atol to yourself!
The last of the dive and snorkelling options along the African coast, Kenya offers mainly oceanic wall diving and inner reef coral diving so it is not necessarily suited to everyone but with very good pelagics running up and down the coast including barracuda, yellow fin tuna and sail fish, there is still plenty to see and do. Head to the beaches around Watamu and Diani for the best properties and operators.
