For those that are keen on wildlife, there is very little that can compare to spending some time in the savannahs, wetlands and forests of Africa. After all, it was here that hominid humans took their first steps and where, today, some of the world's most ingenious, dynamic and hardy animals still reside in some of the world's most pristine and protected lands. To travel to Africa is a life changing experience.
Nowhere else on the planet can feature such a wide diversity of animals than the cradle of mankind, Africa.
For many that are looking to go on a safari for the first time, the “hoped for” animals would include what are known as the “big 6”, lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. But these are not the animals that, necessarily, keep people coming back to the continent, time after time.
To witness the thundering crossing of the great wildebeest migration herds in the Serengeti, or to glide up to a solitary shoebill stork, the list of memorable animal encounters can go on forever.
In this section we have detailed a few of Africa’s most loved inhabitants and, for each, have tried to give an idea for where and how is best to go and see them for yourself.
