In the golden light of dawn, a shadow moves across the savanna. It is the Cape buffalo—unyielding, watchful, and bound by the strength of the herd. Here, in the heart of Africa, survival is a shared endeavor, and the buffalo is its stoic sentinel.
The African Cape buffalo is one of Africa’s most formidable and iconic mammals. Weighing up to 900 kg (nearly 2,000 lbs) and standing over 1.5 meters (5 feet) at the shoulder, these muscular herbivores are known for their sweeping horns and intense stare.
Often called “Black Death” by locals, they’re revered for their unpredictable nature and are a member of Africa’s famed “Big Five” game animals.
Cape buffalo thrive in a variety of habitats, from savannas and floodplains to dense woodlands and swamps. They are highly social, living in large herds that can number in the hundreds, offering protection from predators like lions. Grazers by nature, they feed primarily on grasses and spend much of their day moving and munching. Their strong herd bonds and cooperative defense strategies make them a fascinating study in survival.
In Africa, Cape buffalo are pretty wide spread, commonly spotted in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Amboseli National Parks, as well as Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. In southern Africa walking with the giant herds in South Luangwa or in the Moremi in Botswana’s Okavango Delta are real highlights.
