Which Countries to Consider
Often the starting point for any honeymoon trip is choosing which of the 7 or so countries in Africa to choose for your special, romantic safari.
Of course, each safari country in Africa has different positive and negative elements to consider. In East Africa it is possible to see the famed parks of the Serengeti and the Masai Mara which combine easily with the coastal islands of Zanzibar.
In southern Africa the exclusive safaris of Botswana and the remote, adventure safaris of Zambia offer something altogether different with walking safaris and the famed Okavanago Delta on offer.
Have a look at our honeymoon country guides below for more information on where we recommend.
What Times of Year Should You Go?
Sitting on or very close to the Equator, East Africa offers good conditions and comfortable year-round temperatures, so it’s hard to define a specific “best time to go”. That being said, the dry period between July and October is often seen as a very favourable period as the wildebeest migration herds are stationary in the northern grasslands of the Serengeti and into the Masai Mara.
The period between April and May is the rainy season across East Africa and many of the camps and properties are closed or inaccessible so this is a period that we would not advise to travel in (although gorilla trekking in Rwanda is still feasible during this period).
Southern Africa follows a similar pattern with the main rains arriving between December and March and the flood waters of the Okavanago arriving into the delta from late April through until the end of October. Zambia is best between June and November.
Often a Key Factor in Any African Honeymoon
Probably one of the most important factors in any honeymoon trip, budget will determine how many places you can visit and the type of accommodation you go for. Apart from the cost of international and domestic flights which can be expensive, we believe Africa offers excellent value for money, especially in terms of the level of accommodation you can get!
While luxury, no-expense spared options do exist, for those wanting to stick to a budget, there is also an abundance of good-quality camps and properties which offer exceptional value for money, selling from anything between U$D600 and U$D2,500 per person per night.
These prices may, on the face of it, seem quite high, it is worth remembering that this price includes all of your meals, your game viewing activities with a trained guide and often much more!
