Black Rhino

Across the sun‑bleached plains, the black rhino moves with a quiet, ancient dignity. Its hooked lip browses the shrubs, its horns casting long shadows in the fading light. Here stands a creature shaped by millennia — powerful, vulnerable, and utterly irreplaceable in the delicate balance of Africa’s wild spaces.
The African black rhinoceros is a powerful, hook-lipped herbivore known for its two keratin horns and stocky frame. Adults stand about 1.5 meters (5 ft) tall and weigh between 800–1,400 kilograms (1,700-3,000 lbs). Though called “black,” their colour ranges from grey to brown. These critically endangered mammals inhabit savannas, scrublands, and woodlands, where their solitary nature and keen senses help them navigate a shrinking wild.
Black rhinos are browsers, feeding on leafy shrubs, twigs, and fruit using their prehensile upper lip. They are mostly solitary, with males fiercely territorial and females forming loose bonds with their young. Active during cooler hours, they wallow in mud to cool off and protect their skin. Despite their reputation for aggression, they’re curious and cautious, relying on smell and hearing more than sight to interpret their surroundings.
In Africa the rhino is certainly becoming rarer and rarer with only a few “specialist” areas promoting them such as Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, or Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater.
