WHERE TO GO

Tanzania

An overview of where to go and what's on offer in Tanzania...

Up and coming as one of the most varied safari destinations in Africa, Tanzania can boast of palm fringed shores, mountainous forests, the volcanic grasslands and wending river systems. Each of these differing habitats gives rise to a broad spectrum of safari activities such as the great wildebeest migration in the Seregenti, chimpanzee trekking in Mahale, boating and walking safaris in Nyerere and Ruaha and sun kissed beaches on the spice island of Zanzibar. It is no wonder it is a destination many return to time and time again!

The best parks & regions in Tanzania

Tanzania is often considered solely as being the “other half” to the great wildebeest migration between the Masai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in the north of Tanzania…but this is to completely overlook the country’s vast array of safari options.

As per the above, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara National Parks are considered as the only safari options worth considering. In our opinion, for those in the know, better to consider Nyerere and Ruaha or even the distant and remote Katavi and Mahale for something that will be remembered for a lifetime!

Do see Parks & Regions on this page for more information.

Best time to visit Tanzania

As with most of Africa, the June to November window is still one of the best to head any of the parks in the country, in particular to the southern and western parks.

On top of this, with the wildebeest herds calving in the southern grasslands of the Serengeti at the start of the year, from late December to March, the game viewing in this window can also be very rewarding and a good time to avoid some of the larger crowds.

Please see our When to Go section for a more detailed breakdown of the areas and months below.

Tanzania safari holidays

The topography in Tanzania allows for a huge array of different safari combinations and activities. It is possible to swim in Lake Victoria after walking with chimps to then see the wildebeest of the north or camp in the bush and then luxuriate in the finest luxury on a white sand beach. The options (and budgets!) are endless!

With so many nuances to factor in, there is no substitute, in our experience, for having a talk through with someone but, to get you started we have also developed a Safari Finder that should allow you to get a few options initially.

Do see Best Safaris & Holidays on this page for more ideas of what is on offer.

Tanzania Wildlife

Without doubt, the wildebeest herds of the Serengeti plains are the most famed animal to roam the plains but vast buffalo numbers in Katavi, crocodiles in Nyerere, elephant in Tarangire or lion in Ruaha show that you can return time and time again.

For those looking for the more illusive animals the southern parks have reliable wild dog numbers while the only animal that is not really on show is the rhino.

Get help with a Safari to Tanzania

As much as AI has changed the way we all approach our lives, there is still no substitute for picking up the phone and having a chat through the options with one of us on +44 1525 840 149

This allows us to completely tailor the property choices, costs and itinerary length to your needs…but we also understand that this is not always possible with the busy lives we all lead.

With this in mind, we have also put together a safari finder tool that should help you to narrow down the initial stages at which point we can jump in to “round off the edges” as it were.

Alternatively please feel free to send us an email with your timings, group size and rough likes and dislikes and we can get the ball rolling.

January fair

Visiting Tanzania in January 2026/27

With humidity across the country jumping after the short rains of November and December, it is normally recommended to consider the southern grasslands of the Serengeti in this window where the game viewing is outstanding and the temperatures in the relatively higher grasslands very comfortable. For the birders out there, this is the season for excellent birding across the country!

Activities & Events

Both the northern parks of the Serengeti and the southern parks of Nyerere and Ruaha are great to visit with wildebeest herds in the southern grasslands of the Serengeti.

Cheat Sheet

  • + Mostly clear, dry weather
  • + Fantastic wildlife viewing/numbers in the southern Serengeti
  • + Quieter time to travel
  •   Can be humid in the southern parks

Top Tips for January 2026/27

  • + Great price savings in the southern parks

February fair

Visiting Tanzania in February 2026/27

As with January, with the rise in humidty, the February window is particularly good in the southern grasslands of the Serengeti where the wildebeest migration herds are milling before their yearly pilgramage northwards. Elsewhere, with the bush drying back, the game viewing starts to improve again.

Activities & Events

Head to the southern grasslands of the Serengeti for the wildebeest herds at their very peak!

Cheat Sheet

  • + Mostly clear, dry weather
  • + Great migration herds in the southern Serengeti
  • + Fewer tourists travelling
  •   Southern parks are still quite green

Top Tips for February 2026/27

  • + Consider the southern parks for secluded safaris

March fair

Visiting Tanzania  in March 2026/27

The March window is the last month when the wildebeest migration herds are together in the southern grasslands of the Serengeti. Towards the end of the month the main rains start to arrive into Tanzania and trigger the herd movement northwards. The southern parks of Nyerere and Ruaha are drying up and the humidity reducing which is making for good sightings once more.

Activities & Events

Game viewing is good across the country with the southern parks offering exceptional birding in particular.

Cheat Sheet

  • + Mostly clear, dry weather until rains arrive at end of month
  • + Fantastic wildlife viewing/numbers in southern Serengeti
  • + Southern parks are empty
  •   Humidity is still high in the build up to the rains

Top Tips for March 2026/27

  • + Head to the Western corridor in the Serengeti for early migration

April mixed

Visiting Tanzania in April 2026/27

April and May are when the main rains come to Tanzania and it is a period of renewal for the country. As such, many of the parks and properties close for much needed maintenance and a well earned break for the staff. This being said, as the rains fall across the Serengeti, powerful storm clouds give spectacular backdrops to the game viewing that, if you venture to the central Serengeti, is still there in abudance.

Activities & Events

The wildebeest herds start to move through the southern regions of the Serengeti. The beaches on the coast still offer great relaxation options.

Cheat Sheet

  • + Storm clouds give an awesome backdrop
  • + Good game viewing in the central, Seronera region of the Serengeti
  •   Main rains have arrived which can dampen the mood
  •   Limited property options

Top Tips for April 2026/27

  • + Can be excellent value with days of clear skies

May mixed

Visiting Tanzania in May 2026/27

The second month of the main rains in East Africa brings more of the same. Spectacular lightening storms and rainfall that comes to renew the African earth. The wildebeest migration herds continue their movement to the northern grasslands of the Serengeti running through the Seronera and Grumeti river systems.

Activities & Events

Where the southern parks are now closed for tourism, the Serengeti offers great viewing and almost no other travellers.

Cheat Sheet

  • + Storm clouds give an awesome backdrop
  • + Good game viewing in the central, Seronera region of the Serengeti
  •   Main rains have arrived which can dampen the mood
  •   Limited property options

Top Tips for May 2026/27

  • + Can be excellent value with days of clear skies

June great

Visiting Tanzania in June 2026/27

With the end of the main rainy season comes a renewed energy to the bush. Plenty of young calves and healthy animals are enjoying this period of plenty. All of the main parks start to re-open with the migration herds of the Serengeti starting to reach the northern borders and spill over into the Masai Mara in Kenya towards the end of the month.

Activities & Events

Heading to the southern parks of Nyerere and Ruaha can really pay dividends in this month.

Cheat Sheet

  • + Warm weather and low humidity
  • + Bush starting to dry back in the southern parks
  • + Migration herds running through central Serengeti
  •   Tourist numbers increase in the north

Top Tips for June 2026/27

  • + A great month to head to the southern parks for low prices and great game

July best

Visiting Tanzania in July 2026/27

July is considered to be one of the peak months to come to Tanzania. The wildebeest herds have now reached the northern grasslands of the Serengeti where they will reside for the next 3 months or so and the southern parks of Nyerere and Ruaha are now offering excellent game viewing.

Activities & Events

All eyes tend toward the wildebeest herds in the northern grasslands at this time of the year but, for us, we would also strongly recommend the southern parks.

Cheat Sheet

  • + The dry season is in full swing
  • + Really good game viewing across the country
  • + The Great Migration is in the Lamai area
  •   Peak season rates puch up budgets

Top Tips for July 2026/27

  • + For those not desperate to see the wildebeest consider heading south

August amazing

Visiting Tanzania in August 2026/27

The second of the “peak” months to visit Tanzania, August offers amongst the best game viewing in Africa with wildebeest herds milling around in the north of the Serengeti and plenty of great game viewing in the southern and western parks.

Activities & Events

Game viewing across the country is exceptional but the northern Serengeti and Ruaha parks both deserve a special mention.

Cheat Sheet

  • + Clear and dry weather throughout the month
  • + Wildebeest herds are stationary in the northern grasslands
  •   This is as busy as it gets for tourists in the year
  •   Peak season prices can be offputting

Top Tips for August 2026/27

  • + We would normally ask if it is possible to shift dates to September!

September great

Visiting Tanzania in September 2026/27

September in Tanzania continues the exceptional game viewing of the previuos 2 months but with the added bonus that many of the tourist numbers are now starting to fall. With the wildebeest herds still located in the Lamai and the parks looking drier, this is probably our pick of the months in the year.

Activities & Events

With the exception of the hippo pods and denning crocodile in Katavi, you could put a pin in a map of Tanzania and get great game!

Cheat Sheet

  • + The weather is dry and stable
  • + Game has now congregated around the water sources
  • + Visitor numbers fall off in the month
  •   While not as expensive as August, rates are still higher

Top Tips for September 2026/27

  • + After the 11th September offers improved availability

October still good

Visiting Tanzania in October 2026/27

October starts to offer a bit of a mixed bag as far as temperatures and rainfall goes. Towards the end of the month the short rains start to arrive and so trigger the wildebeest herd movement back to the southern grasslands of the Serengeti and temperatures start to increase.

Activities & Events

As the water recedes in the Katuma River, the hippo pods start to amalgamate and the crocodiles start to dig in for the drought in Katavi National Park.

Cheat Sheet

  • + Dry weather for the first half of the month
  • + Game viewing is still prolific throughout
  • + a great time to get some winter sunshine!
  •   Rainfall towards the end of the month triggers herd movement

Top Tips for October 2026/27

  • + Look to avoid the school holidays for better availability

November fair

Visiting Tanzania in November 2026/27

November is, traditionally, the short rainy period in Tanzania. It is the month when the wildebeest migration herds are on the move from the northern grasslands back to the southern grasslands of the Serengeti, around Lake Ndutu. The game starts to disperse into the new bush growth in the Southern parks.

Activities & Events

With a drop off in rates, it can be a great time to head to Nyerere National Park to see the migrating bird numbers that arrive around now.

Cheat Sheet

  • + Weather can be a bit changeable with short bursts of rainfall
  • + Game viewing is still great at the front end of the month
  • + The birding is particularly good
  •   The rainfall can disperse game and the wildebeest herds are on the move

Top Tips for November 2026/27

  • + Look to the southern parks right at the start of the month

December fair

Visiting Tanzania in December 2026/27

December is still considered to be a lower season month to come to Tanzania with the short rains in their second month and, accordingly, the wildebeest herds on their way down from the north to the south of the Serengeti and visibility in the southern parks becoming harder.

Activities & Events

Towards the end of the month the migration herds start to reach the southern grasslands.

Cheat Sheet

  • + Short rains becoming drier at the end of the month
  • + Low season rates offer great value for money
  •   It can be difficult to predict game viewing
  •   The festive period is crazily busy!

Top Tips for December 2026/27

  • + Book early for the festive period

The Serengeti National Park
Along with the Okavango Delta in Botswana and the Masai Mara in Kenya, the grassland plains of the Serengeti is one of the most famous places in Africa to go for a safari. The main key to coming here is in understanding the migration movement. The herds of wildebeest move annually on a fairly predictable pattern and the reason for their movement is down to the rain fall patterns and feeding grounds that are available. Read more…

The Ngorongoro Crater
Located just to the east of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater is always included in an itinerary to the north of Tanzania…and rightly so! What was once a volcano at around 6,000m, the Ngorongoro Crater of today is a mere 2,400, having blasted the rest out across the southern plains of the Serengeti (which is partly the reason for the wildebeest liking this area so much, due to the rich mineral content of the grass). The crater measures approximately 20 kms across and is a haven for wildlife with great grazing year round. Read more…

Tarangire National Park
Often dubbed as the main reason to come here, the vast elephant herds that wander in and out of the park throughout the year are to be seen to be believed. This is not, however, the only reason to come here with both lesser and great Kudu to be seen, plentiful lion, leopard and cheetah, as well as a variety of interesting habitats and accommodations. Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro, at around 6,000m towers over the plains of Eastern Africa and is one of the most iconic volcanoes in the world. As Africa’s highest peak it is always on the lists of those visiting the continent that are keen on walking and mountaineering. The slopes themselves are fairly innocuous and so it is usually the altitude that is the issue for most with the starting point at around 1,400m and the average climbing time being around 3 days. Selous Game Reserve
If you are not set on seeing the herds but would still like a very high standard of safari then the southern parks of the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park could not really be bettered. These parks are far less visited than those of the north and, as such, the overall costs and general time spent getting to and from are much less. For this reason, this area of Tanzania is somewhere that we recommend frequently to clients. Read more…

Ruaha National Park
A short, hour and a half flight to the west of the Selous, Ruaha National Park offers something different again, and the combination of the two is really worthwhile. Where the Selous is “riverine”, with lush forests springing up along the banks of the river, Ruaha is characterised by its lack of water and the red soil that shows through here. Read more…

Mahale National Park
Located right over on the western edge of Tanzania, Mahale is very infrequently visited and, as such, provide some of the most untouched safari and chimpanzee experiences possible on the continent… Definitely something worth a think about. Read more…

Katavi National Park
One of the last true strong-holds of “old” Africa…as it has existed for millions of years, Katavi is to witness safari as it should be…huge herds of Cape buffalo lumber across the three main grasslands that form the centre of the park. Gathering overnight at the main confluences that sit in between the plains allows the predators of the park, lion, leopard, hyena, to come and take pot shots at this massive herd and supplies some of the best game viewing in Africa! Zanzibar and islands
Most of those that set their sights on Tanzania are also, more often than not, thinking of a quick stay on the island of Zanzibar… home to spices and warm Indian Ocean breezes. Less well known, however, are the islands of Pemba and Mafia, to the north and south of Zanzibar and, for those that dive, these are certainly destinations that are well worth considering…although, for the beach lovers, there may be a little disappointment as these are also mangrove islands and, as such, the beaches can be a little less than expected.
