Where to Stay

Greystoke Mahale

from $2,365 per person per night for 2026/27

One of Africa's best lodges

Well...what to say about Greystoke Mahale (once known as Zoe's Camp)? Every so often we come across a camp that just gets it right. In Ruaha it is Mwagusi, in Nyerere it is Beho Beho....well, in Africa, it is Greystoke's! While this is not a safari destination, just the whole experience of the journey across Lake Tanganyika, the stunning beach and atmosphere of Greystoke camp...and the first glimpse of the chimps is enough!

Unbelievable food/service/location/activities

Getting here is not easy!

About the location

Nestled into the forest of Mahale as it drops down to meet the shores of Lake Tanganyika, it is often necessary to pinch yourself that this place is real! It is true that to get here takes a mamoth journey from either the foothills of Kilimanjaro or the wind swept shores of Dar es Salaa, but this is to step back in time and visit a slice of paradise!

camp Layout

“Laid back” is a phrase that is often used these days to describe somewhere that exudes a sense of calm and where time seems to standstill. If it were possible to put this sense into a physical form then the layout for this camp would be that!

Loosely centred around the main dining and reading area, the dhow bandas are connecting by sand walkways and sweeping views to the lake as if emerging from the forest itself!

Greystoke Mahale Accomodation

They have really managed to get it right, using local dhow wood for all of the rooms that seem to melt into the rainforest. The main building is also truly iconic in its design and build, with feet in the sand and views out onto Lake Tanganyika it is another world altogether.

Wildlife & Activities at Greystoke Mahale

While the chimp tracking is something that we recommend for everyone at least once in a lifetime, there are also plenty of activities to choose from in and around the lake. The fishing and dhow trips out onto the lake for a swim are great, and the natural rainforest itself is also a truly wondrous place to wander out into for an hour or so to learn the local uses for plants etc.

The combination of here and Katavi will simply blow you away…of the many combinations in Africa, this is definitely up there with the best.

Overview

With access to the chimps getting more and more restricted (they are considering restricting access to just an hour per visitor in a 3 day stay…still definitely worth it, but worth bearing in mind)…which, for their conservation is a good thing….it is more and more important to choose the right lodge to stay in, and Greystoke is definitely that lodge.

Location

They have really managed to get it right, using local dhow wood for all of the rooms that seem to melt into the rainforest. The main building is also truly iconic in its design and build, with feet in the sand and views out onto Lake Tanganyika it is another world altogether.
