In the emerald canopy of East Africa, the colobus monkey dances through the trees. With flowing fur and silent leaps, it glides from branch to branch — a creature of elegance and mystery, perfectly adapted to life above the forest floor.
The African colobus monkey, also known as the black-and-white colobus, is a striking primate with flowing white mantle hair and a long bushy tail. Adults measure up to 75 cm in body length, with tails often longer than their bodies. These elegant monkeys are thumbless, agile tree-dwellers found in East Africa’s lush forests, captivating visitors with their graceful movements and social charm.
Colobus monkeys thrive in tropical and montane forests, living high in the canopy in small troops. They are strict leaf-eaters, using complex stomachs to digest tough foliage that other primates avoid. Their diet includes young leaves, fruit, flowers, and bark. Rarely descending to the ground, they leap between branches with acrobatic ease, using their tails and mantle hair like parachutes to glide through the treetops.
To see colobus monkeys in East Africa, visit Kenya’s Kakamega Forest or Tanzania’s Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions. Uganda’s Kibale Forest and Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park also offer prime sightings. Luxury lodges like Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Arusha Coffee Lodge, and One&Only Nyungwe House provide exceptional comfort and expert guides for unforgettable primate encounters in these biodiverse havens.
