With its huge variety of topographies, terrains and temperatures, Tanzania is top of the list for almost any birder. At the time or writing the country is home to well over 1,000 different endemic bird species with isolated areas such as the Eastern Arc Mountain Range offering the only place on the planet to see certain species. Add in the migratory bird life that arrives into the country from November to April and it is hard to better.
Combining open grasslands, primary rainforest, rivers, and marshlands, Uganda is, along with Tanzania, one of the best destinations in the world for the avid bird fan. The country boasts well over 1,000 species of bird and, with the Mabamba swamps only a short boat trip out of Entebbe, offers one of the easiest locations in which to see the elusive shoebill stork.
Botswana Bird Safari
The final destination we often recommend to birding enthusiasts is Botswana, right in the central south of the African continent. While a large proportion of the country sits on Kalahari sands, the Okavango Delta, the Chobe waterfront and the Savuti marshes provide excellent habitats for a wide variety of bird species. Add in the seasonal flooding of the Mkgadikgadi Salt pans (which attract plentiful flamingoes) and there is plenty to interest between the months of November and March (the main rainy period).
