Where to Stay

Chada Camp

from $1,190 per person per night for 2026/27

Rough luxury in the middle of our favourite park in Africa...

The only other camp in Katavi of real note, Chada Camp, as the name suggests, looks out onto the Chada floodplain and is set at the other end of the Katuma River systems to Katavi Wildlife camp. Established as a simple tented camp, Chada Camp does offer something a little different to its neighbour in that it has the feel of a satellite camp, of being more exploratory in its design. We would still opt for Katavi Wildlife ourselves, but Chada definitely has its place.

Great location, good service, “exploratory” feel

Quite simple

About the location

The camp, as with many camps in seasonal areas across Africa, is broken down when the rains arrive in November and so has a fairly short usage life.

This means that, instead of plumbing and other more permanent features, they have decided to pare the camp back to basics with long drop loos and bucket showers…in all honesty, if you have never used these before, there is absolutely no difference to normal….if, like me, you are a Londoner, you may actually find this to be an improvement!

One thing that the Nomads cooperative have firmly built into all of their camps is the emphasis on wildlife. All of their camps, Sand Rivers, Greystoke Mahale, Nomads Serengeti, are unique in their design and have tried to incorporate whichever habitat they are located in into the features. This is no exception in Chada Camp.

The simple design of the tents, with the small external walkway to the loos, is in keeping with the exploratory nature of the park itself and it really adds to the experience.

Chada Camp Accomodation

As mentioned above, the tents in Chada are seasonal and, as such, they are designed to be broken down and leave as little impact as possible on the wilderness they are part of.

With very comfortable beds, “bucket-showers”, “long-drop” loos and covered verandahs, this is camping in a lot of style!

Wildlife & Activities at Chada Camp

Katavi National Park has taken on a status amongst safari afficionados as a bit of a “unicorn” destination. The three interlocking grassland plains host very large herds of buffalo which, as the park dries between June and November, come into the Katuma river system to drink in the evenings.

This daily flow of animals gives rise for some epic encounters between lion, leopard and even wild dog and the herds. Throw in the hippo super pod and the denning crocodile and this is something a little special!

The game in the area and the park is, without doubt, some of the best in Africa and, taking in the great service and food in camp, this is a superb little option.
