Zebra

As dawn breaks over the golden plains, a ripple of stripes dances across the horizon. The zebra — vigilant, social and endlessly graceful — begins its daily journey. In this moment, the savannah reveals one of its most enduring and mesmerising inhabitants.
The African zebra is one of the continent’s most iconic animals, instantly recognisable by its striking black and white stripes. Typically standing around 1.50 metres (5 feet) tall and weighing between 250–300 kg (550–660 lbs), the plains zebra is the most widespread species. These social grazers roam savannahs and grasslands in dazzling herds, their stripes acting as camouflage and a defence against predators.
Zebras are herbivores, feeding primarily on grasses, but they also nibble on shrubs and leaves during dry seasons. They live in family groups called harems and often form larger herds for protection. Highly mobile, they migrate long distances in search of food and water, sometimes covering up to 2,900 kilometres annually. Their strong social bonds and alert nature help them thrive in predator-rich environments.
In Africa, zebras are found in Kenya and Tanzania, especially in the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Amboseli National Parks.
