Where to Stay

The Serena Hotel

from $155 per person per night for 2026/27

An oasis in the center of this energetic city.

Right in the heart of the city, the (newly named) Serena Hotel has long been the place to stay for its range of facilities, location and overall grand design. It has been usurped a little in the top end of the market by the nearby Kempinski and the outstanding Oyster Bay Hotel, but that is not to say that it does not offer much better value for money than these two and, for a quick overnight on the way to or from safari it is perfect.

Great location, great facilities and aspect over the golf course, good value

As with many business hotels the service can be hit or miss

About the location

As mentioned, the Dar es Salaam Serena is a large hotel, located right in the heart of downtown Dar es Salaam. While this attracts plenty of business clientele (the lifeblood of its income) it does also make it an attractive option for tourists who need to overnight on their way through to other areas of Tanzania.

hotel Layout

The hotel has a grand and once majestic air to it when you enter the main foyer. This is reflected throughout the communal areas of the building with the fantastic outside restaurant and coffee lounge one of the highlights.

Backing onto the city’s golf course, this is one of the major advantages that the Serena holds over its competitors is that it does not feel like you are in one of the largest cities in Africa!

The Serena Hotel Accomodation

The rooms themselves are fairly standard affairs with good aspects out across the city the further up the building you go. Featuring many of the modern comforts you would expect today such as Sat TVs and aircon, they have recently refurbished the decoration and the rooms are simple and elegant in their design.

The service and food, similarly, is what you would expect from a hotel of its caliber, with there being a courteous yet functional feel to many things…with so many one night visitors passing through here it is little wonder.

On the whole, as we mention, we are fans of the Serena and certainly recommend it to clients that are not looking to spend a fortune on the likes of the Kempinski or the Oyster Bay Hotel.
