Bush Baby

As dusk settles over the forest, a soft cry pierces the silence. The bush baby—wide-eyed, nimble, and cloaked in moonlight—emerges from its leafy refuge. In Africa’s twilight hours, the canopy comes alive with leaps, whispers, and the quiet charm of this miniature marvel.
The African bush baby, or galago, is a tiny nocturnal primate with oversized eyes, long limbs, and a bushy tail. Adults weigh just 150–200 grams (0.5 lbs) and measure around 30 cm (1 ft) including the tail. These agile creatures are native to sub-Saharan Africa and thrive in forests, woodlands, and savannahs. Their baby-like cries and acrobatic leaps make them one of the continent’s most endearing and elusive night dwellers.
Bush babies are omnivorous, feeding on insects, fruit, flowers, and tree gum, which they extract using specialized toothcombs. They are solitary foragers but sleep in small groups in tree hollows or nests. Their powerful hind legs allow them to leap up to 2 meters between branches. With keen hearing and night vision, they navigate the canopy with precision, often marking territory with scent glands and vocal calls.
In Africa, bush babies can be spotted in Uganda’s Kibale Forest and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Kenya’s Aberdares and Mount Kenya regions, and Tanzania’s Arusha and Mahale Mountains.
