As dusk falls over the African plains, a chorus of whoops echoes through the grass. The spotted hyena — fierce, social and endlessly resourceful — emerges from its den. In the moonlight, it reveals a world of complex hierarchy and surprising grace, a creature both feared and revered.
The African spotted hyena is a powerful and highly intelligent carnivore, often misunderstood due to its eerie laugh and scavenger reputation. Measuring up to 1.5 metres (5 ft) in length and weighing between 40–80 kilograms (90-200 lbs), it is the largest of the hyena species. Found in savannahs, grasslands and woodlands, these adaptable animals thrive across Africa’s diverse landscapes — from open plains to mountainous terrain.
Spotted hyenas are skilled hunters, capable of taking down wildebeest and antelope, though they also scavenge. Living in matriarchal clans of up to 80 individuals, they communicate through whoops, grunts and cackles. Their strong jaws can crush bone, and their digestive systems extract nutrients from nearly every part of a carcass. With excellent night vision, they are mostly nocturnal, patrolling vast territories in search of food.
In East Africa, spotted hyenas are commonly seen in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Amboseli, and Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Luxury lodges such as Angama Mara, Serengeti House and &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge offer expertly guided safaris with chances to observe hyenas hunting, socialising or resting.
