Whale shark

Spotted giant drifting through warm coastal waters.
As the sun filters through the turquoise depths, a vast silhouette drifts silently beneath the waves. The whale shark — immense, peaceful and speckled with stars — glides through the ocean’s embrace, a living relic of ancient seas and a marvel of nature’s design.
The African whale shark is the largest fish in the ocean, reaching up to 18 metres (59 feet) in length and weighing around 34,000 kg (75,000 pounds). With a constellation of white spots across its deep blue skin, this gentle giant glides through tropical waters with serene majesty. Despite its size, it poses no threat to humans and is a favourite among marine wildlife enthusiasts.
Whale sharks are filter feeders, consuming plankton, small fish and squid by drawing water through their gills. They prefer warm, open waters and are often found near coral reefs and island chains. Solitary by nature, they migrate vast distances following seasonal food blooms. Their slow, graceful movements and docile temperament make swimming alongside them a truly humbling experience — a rare privilege in the underwater world.
In East Africa, whale sharks are most commonly spotted off the coasts of Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. Diani Beach and Mafia Island are renowned for sightings, especially between October and March.
