A brief Overview of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park sits between 1,100 and 2,600 meters above sea level and provides habitat for one of the largest populations of mountain gorillas in the world, currently estimated at around 400. As a primary rainforest, it also gives a home to a variety of wildlife such as forest elephant, over 400 species of bird, as well as chimpanzees and other types of primate.
Often used as the main focus of a trip to Uganda, a stop here for a few nights allows an array of different experiences from wildlife viewing to cultural visits with the local Batwa peoples.

Gorilla trekking in bwindi
The gorilla groups in Bwindi are all located in different areas of the park and so which gorilla group you see will depend on where you are staying in the park (northern or southern Bwindi) and how far you want to trek (some can be shorter hour walks, others can be full day treks through the forest).
To see the gorillas, you will need a park permit. Uganda sells 88 gorilla permits per day for Bwindi National Park for 11 gorilla groups, which works out to be a maximum of 8 people trekking to see one gorilla family at a time, accompanied by UWA (Uganda Wildlife Authority) guides. You must be over 15 years old to do a gorilla trek and, at the time of writing (2025), the permits come in at U$D800 per person.
As a gorilla trek is usually a once-in-a-lifetime experience there are a few things to bear in mind to make your trek as comfortable as possible.
Please see our Gorilla Trekking page for more information.

Best time to visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
There are two main seasons to consider for trekking in Bwindi…the dry seasons (between December and February and again between June and September) and the rainy seasons (anything in between). Where the dry season offers clearer skies and drier tracks, the rains bring quieter (read: cheaper) properties but slippier climbs.

As much as AI has changed the way we all approach our lives, there is still no substitute for picking up the phone and having a chat through the options with one of us on +44 1525 840 149
This allows us to completely tailor the property choices, costs and itinerary length to your needs…but we also understand that this is not always possible with the busy lives we all lead.
With this in mind, we have also put together a safari finder tool that should help you to narrow down the initial stages at which point we can jump in to “round off the edges” as it were.
Alternatively please feel free to >send us an email with your timings, group size and rough likes and dislikes and we can get the ball rolling.
