High in the cloud‑kissed forests of East Africa, the mountain gorilla moves with a quiet majesty, its family bound by tenderness and strength. Among ancient trees and drifting mist, we witness a creature whose gentle presence reveals the profound intelligence and emotional depth that shape life in these enchanted highlands.
The African mountain gorilla is a powerful yet gentle primate found only in East Africa’s misty highlands. Adult males, known as silverbacks, can weigh up to 195 kg (430 lbs) and stand 1.8 meters (6 ft) tall. Their thick fur allows them to thrive in cool montane forests, where they live in tight-knit family groups led by dominant males and communicate through vocalizations, gestures, and expressive eyes.
Mountain gorillas are herbivores, consuming up to 30 kg (66 lbs) of vegetation daily — mostly leaves, stems, bark, and fruit. They forage slowly and deliberately, often resting between meals. Social bonds are strong, with mothers nurturing infants for years and silverbacks protecting their troops. These gorillas build new nests each night and spend most of their time on the ground, moving by knuckle-walking through dense foliage and steep terrain.
