What to See

Shoebill Stork

[ Balaeniceps rex ]

Swamp sentinel with a prehistoric stare.

As the mist lifts from Uganda’s wetlands, a shadow looms among the reeds. The shoebill — silent, statuesque, and ancient — surveys its watery realm. With a sudden lunge, it claims its prize, then resumes its vigil. A living relic of the wild, cloaked in mystery and grace.

The African shoebill stork is a striking bird with a prehistoric presence, named for its enormous shoe-shaped bill. Standing up to 1.4 metres (4½ ft) tall with a wingspan of over 2.5 metres (8ft) , it inhabits freshwater swamps and wetlands across tropical East Africa. Despite its imposing size and stern expression, the shoebill is a solitary and surprisingly gentle creature, often found standing motionless among papyrus reeds.

Shoebills are carnivorous, feeding mainly on lungfish, catfish, frogs, and even baby crocodiles. Their hunting style is stealthy — they remain perfectly still before striking with precision. These birds are mostly silent, communicating through bill-clattering and low grunts. Shoebills nest during the dry season, laying one to three eggs, and both parents share incubation duties. Their slow movements and eerie stillness make them captivating to observe in the wild.

In East Africa, Uganda is the prime destination for shoebill sightings. The Mabamba Swamp, just outside of Entebbe is arguably one of the most accessible areas in Africa to see these prehistoric animals. Alternatively, for those of a more adventurous disposition, the Bangweulu Wetlands in Zambia’s remote Eastern areas can also be a good location for sightings.
