What to See

Striped Hyena

[ Hyaena hyaena ]

Solitary scavenger cloaked in stripes and silence.

As twilight descends upon the African plains, a shadow slips silently between the rocks. The striped hyena — mysterious, misunderstood and master of the night — emerges to begin its solitary patrol. In this moment, nature whispers its secrets to those who dare to listen.

The African striped hyena, is a shy, nocturnal scavenger that roams the semi-desert and savannah landscapes of East Africa. Smaller than its spotted cousin, it stands 60–80 cm (2-3 ft) tall and weighs between 22–55 kg (50-120 lbs). With its sloping back, bushy mane and distinctive stripes, this elusive creature is a rare sight, often overshadowed by more gregarious predators in the region.

Striped hyenas are solitary and secretive, preferring rocky outcrops and arid scrublands where they scavenge for carrion, bones and fruit. Unlike the spotted hyena, they rarely hunt in packs and instead rely on their powerful jaws to crush bones for marrow. Their lifestyle is largely nocturnal — emerging at dusk to forage and retreating before dawn. Their keen sense of smell and cautious nature help them avoid conflict with larger carnivores.

In East Africa, striped hyenas can be spotted in parts of Kenya and northern Tanzania, particularly in less-travelled areas of the Masai Mara and Amboseli National Park. For luxury safari seekers, lodges like Angama Mara, Elewana Tortilis Camp and Ol Donyo Lodge offer expert guides and tailored experiences that increase your chances of encountering this elusive creature — often under the cover of night
