About the location
Butiama Beach is located outside of the Marine Park boundaries on Mafia Island, an island south from Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam on the mainland.
Mafia Island’s western shoreline provides calm water for snorkelling among reef fish, starfish and small coral formations, while boat excursions within the Marine Park offer encounters with green turtles, dolphins, reef sharks and rays. Seasonal whale‑shark trips are a major highlight, and diving reveals rich coral gardens where manta rays and larger oceanic species may appear. Kayaking and paddle‑boarding are often possible in sheltered areas, adding soft adventure to the island’s romantic, low‑key setting.
That said, not everything is flawless: the remote island location limits off‑site options, and the relaxed, barefoot style may feel too low‑key for travellers expecting full‑service resort amenities.
hotel Layout
The main area is sheltered under a makuti thatch and its sandy beach-like floor homes a bar, games room, small library, dining area and a small shop. It also has its own spa, offering relaxing treatments throughout the day.
Outside, Butiama has its own swimming pool and quiet, white sand beach. With the exception of a few fishermen, the beach is relatively quiet year-round.

Butiama Beach Accomodation
Butiama Beach has 13 spacious bungalows, made up from double, twin, triple and family rooms to suit all visitors. The bungalows each have a private veranda, featuring comfortable sofas and hammocks to enjoy the sea view and ocean breeze at your leisure.
The furniture in the room (the beds and luggage/storage racks) have been made from reclaimed woods from old, tradition dhows, fitting with the culture and local-living on Mafia Island today.

Wildlife & Activities at Butiama Beach
The beach lodge has its own PADI-certified dive centre and although diving is done on the eastern side of the island (approximately a 30-minute drive), it is a simple process to enquire and book activities during your stay.
Snorkelling and fishing gear, sea kayaks and traditional dhow cruises are also at your disposal. A 15-minute walk along the sandy beach brings you to Kilindoni village and the markets if you are interested in exploring.
