What to See

Reef Shark

[ Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos ]

Streamlined reef predator with shadowed fins and silent grace.

As the tide shifts and the reef awakens, a shadow glides effortlessly between coral towers. The reef shark — vigilant, graceful and perfectly evolved — begins its silent patrol. In this moment, the ocean reveals one of its most refined and enduring hunters.

The African whitetip reef shark is a sleek, medium-sized predator found in warm tropical waters around coral reefs. Typically measuring between 1.50 to 2.5 metres (5 to 8 ft) and weighing around 34 kg (75 lbs), it’s known for its streamlined body and dark-tipped fins. These agile hunters are a common sight along reef drop-offs, where they patrol with quiet confidence and striking grace.

Reef sharks are nocturnal and opportunistic feeders, preying on reef fish, squid and crustaceans. They often cruise in loose groups along reef edges, returning to familiar hunting routes. Though curious, they are generally non-aggressive towards humans and are a favourite among divers. Their habitat includes shallow coral reefs and sandy lagoons — environments rich in biodiversity and perfect for their stealthy hunting style.

In East Africa, reef sharks are frequently spotted off the coasts of Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. Prime locations include Mnemba Atoll, Mafia Island and the Quirimbas Archipelago. Luxury lodges such as Mnemba Island, Thanda Island and Azura Quilalea (currently closed) offer world-class diving experiences, allowing guests to encounter these elegant predators in crystal-clear waters — often just minutes from the beach.
