About the location

Fanjove Island is a private island located south of Mafia and Zanzibar island. To get there, guests will fly to Songo Songo island, where they will be able to explore the community life of the fishermen. From here, it is just a short boat journey across to Fanjove, where the beauty of the island will be immediately noticed.

island Layout

The island is completely private in that nobody, except the guests and the dedicated staff, lives on Fanjove. There are 20 skillfully designed and built bandas (translated as ‘huts’ in Swahili) that are spread out along the white sand beach, ensuring the guests privacy and a beautiful ocean view.

Each banda has a path directly to the dining area where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served, overlooking the beautiful blue ocean.

Fanjove Private Island Accomodation

The traditionally built bandas all offer plenty of space and all that you would need if your aim is to relax and just enjoy the sense of isolation that this remote corner of the world offers. 

Each of the rooms has been built using local coral stones (for the open air showers), mahogany wood for the flooring and the local roof thatching for the cooling roof. The sum of the parts are some of the best “barefoot” beach accommodation along the East African coast. Paradise!

Wildlife & Activities at Fanjove Private Island

During the day it will be possible to amuse ones self with various water activities, including diving in the crystalline water to discover a yet unexplored paradise. There are many activities on the water, including snorkelling, diving, kayaking, dolphin excursions, dhow sailing and fishing.

On shore, guests can completely relax on the white sand beach, or walk around the private idyllic island on a nature trail.

Location

Fanjove Island is a private island located south of Mafia and Zanzibar island. To get there, guests will fly to Songo Songo island, where they will be able to explore the community life of the fishermen. From here, it is just a short boat journey across to Fanjove, where the beauty of the island will be immediately noticed.

Layout

The island is completely private in that nobody, except the guests and the dedicated staff, lives on Fanjove. There are six memorable wooden bandas (translated as ‘huts’ in Swahili) that are spread out along the white sand beach, ensuring the guests privacy and a beautiful ocean view. Each banda has a path directly to the dining area where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served, overlooking the beautiful blue ocean.

Rooms

The wooden bandas are shaped to represent a local dhow sail. They are made of wood and makuti (palm leaves that are used extensively across Tanzania). The bathroom is concrete but has been shaped in harmony with the rest of the banda. The bedroom and ensuite bathroom sit on the lower level, and to maximise the views of the ocean, there is a balcony on the top level to enjoy the peacefulness of the island. The bandas are solar-powered and there is no electricity in the individual bandas, but there is in the main dining area.

Activities
