Where to Stay

Beyt al Salaam

from $50 per person per night for 2026/27

A quiet location and oasis of calm in the turmoil of Stone Town...
Beyt al Salaam

Along with the Seyyida and Mashariki Palace, Beyt al Salaam is probably our pick of the options in and around Stone Town. Located away from the main bustle of the alleyways (but within a 5 minute walk), the location of Beyt al Salaam is probably its biggest selling point as far as we are concerned. The hotel itself is fairly simple in its design and feel, and is not somewhere that you could stay for an extended period but, as most will only stay for a night or two, it is a great choice.

Great location, very good service, good restaurant, good value

About the location

Located just over a small square to the Serena Hotel, it is, therefore, also possible to bypass the alleys and just relax in front of the Indian Ocean with a cold drink which, considering the heat can really be a lifeline!

The western edge of Stone Town provides access to short boat excursions where snorkelling reveals small coral patches, colourful reef fish and occasional juvenile rays. Local operators offer trips toward offshore reefs for more varied marine life, while the historic quarter features sunbirds, butterflies and other soft urban wildlife. Although not beach‑side, the area still allows gentle, easily accessible marine experiences for travellers seeking light adventure.

On the downside, street noise can be intrusive, and the compact room layouts feel less spacious than modern coastal resorts during busy periods.

hotel Layout

The style and feel of Beyt al Salaam is more of a guesthouse than a hotel as such (as with many of the properties in Stone Town) and there is a relaxed and informal feel to the way it is managed (they have an honour bar system for the drinks in the main sitting area).

This makes it feel like a home from home and so it is a relaxing place to be able to get away from the bustle and dance of Stone Town itself.

Beyt al Salaam Accomodation

As with many of the properties in the melee that is Stone Town, as a converted merchant house, the rooms hark back to that era and are, therfore, not as sophisticated as some are used to.

This being said, with a night or possibly two being the normal amount of time spent here, the chance to stay in what is living history is a price worth paying we would argue.
