White Rhino

Across the sweeping grasslands of Africa, the white rhino grazes with quiet assurance, its massive frame shaped by millennia of evolution. Gentle yet formidable, it moves through the landscape like a living relic, reminding us of the delicate balance that sustains the wild and the responsibility we share in protecting it.
The African white rhinoceros, is the largest of all rhino species, with males weighing up to 2,300 kg (5070 lbs) and measuring over 4 meters (13ft) in length. Despite their name, they’re actually grey, and the “white” comes from a misinterpretation of the Afrikaans word “weit,” meaning wide—referring to their broad mouths. These gentle giants inhabit open grasslands and savannas, where they graze and roam with a stately presence.
White rhinos are grazers, feeding almost exclusively on short grasses. They have a square-shaped lip perfectly adapted for sweeping the ground as they walk. Unlike their solitary black rhino cousins, white rhinos are more social and often seen in small groups. They are diurnal, spending most of the day feeding and resting in shaded areas. Calves stay close to their mothers for up to three years, learning the rhythms of the wild.
In Africa, white rhinos are best seen in Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Solio Game Reserve. Uganda’s Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary also offers close-up encounters on foot.
