Where to Stay

Mchenja Camp

from $1,200 per person per night for 2026/27

A charming bush camp, part of the Norman Carr portfolio

Mchenja Camp is part of the Norman Carr Bushcamp portfolio which works perfectly in a stand-alone itinerary, or combined with the more luxurious camp of Chinzombo for example. The camp sits between an ebony tree forest and the Luangwa River in the Nsefu sector — the perfect base for watching herds of elephant crossing the river!

Great for those who want a bushcamp experience but with a splash of luxury

Still quite pricey compared to other bushcamps

About the location

Mchenja Camp sits inside the South Luangwa Park, just north of the Mfuwe area of the park. This area has exceptional game viewing because on either side of the Luangwa River is national park (across the river, Mchenja looks out to the Nsefu Sector). This means that the game is protected on both sides of the river so prides of lion, huge herds of elephant and buffalo and many more can be seen regularly here.

camp Layout

Five safari chalets make up Mchenja so the overall feel of the camp is intimate and relaxed. There is also a two-bedroom family suite which is perfect for larger families or groups of friends travelling together.

The main lounge and bar area is very relaxed, guests can come and go as they please to get their favourite drink. Mchenja also has a pool which overlooks the river — perfect for those hotter days.

Mchenja Camp Accomodation

Although the camp is seasonal (between the end of May and November), it features everything you would expect from a permanent luxury camp. Each suite features well-appointed en-suite bathrooms, large picture windows and a freestanding bath looking out to the Luangwa River. The room is made from reed and thatch which gives it that “bush camp” feel.

Wildlife & Activities at Mchenja Camp

Mchenja’s location means that game drives can be done either north of the camp (to a move secluded, quieter region of the park), or southwards towards the Mfuwe Lagoon (which is busier but has very reliable wildlife sightings). The game walks are throughout the beautiful ebony grove and it is possible to walk between the sister properties; Nsolo and Luwi bushcamps.
