Across the boundless plains of Africa, the wildebeest moves in a living tide — a restless, rhythmic surge shaped by rain, instinct, and survival. In their millions, they transform the landscape, revealing one of nature’s greatest spectacles: a migration of astonishing scale, danger, and determination.
The African wildebeest, also known as the gnu, is a robust, shaggy-coated antelope with curved horns and a distinctive sloping back. Males can weigh up to 275 kg (600 lbs) and stand 1.5 meters (5 ft) tall. These animals are famous for their dramatic mass migrations and are among the most abundant large herbivores in East Africa’s savannas.
Wildebeests inhabit open grasslands and acacia-dotted plains, grazing on short grasses and moving in vast herds. Their lifestyle is nomadic, driven by seasonal rains and fresh pasture. Highly social, they often mix with zebras for added protection. Calves are born during migration and can walk within minutes — an evolutionary marvel that helps them keep pace with the herd’s relentless journey.
