As darkness settles over the African plains, a curious figure stirs — the aardvark, master of the night. With quiet determination it roams the earth, shaping the ecosystem one burrow at a time. In its gentle, deliberate way, this remarkable creature reminds us how even the unseen can hold extraordinary power in the wild.
The African aardvark, is a curious nocturnal mammal found across sub-Saharan Africa. With a pig-like snout, long ears, and a powerful tail, it can reach up to 2.2 meters in length and weigh as much as 65 kg. Despite its odd appearance, this solitary creature is perfectly adapted for life in savannas and semi-arid regions, where it burrows deep into the earth to escape the heat and predators.
Aardvarks are myrmecophagous, meaning they feed almost exclusively on ants and termites. Using their keen sense of smell and strong claws, they dig into termite mounds and slurp up insects with a sticky, 30 cm-long tongue. They are nocturnal wanderers, covering vast distances each night in search of food. Their burrows also provide shelter for other animals, making them vital ecosystem engineers in their native habitats.
In Africa, aardvarks can be spotted in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and Zambia. Prime viewing locations include Masai Mara, Laikipia Plateau, The Serengeti and Lower Zambezi National Park. Luxury safari lodges such as Segera Retreat, Loisaba Tented Camp, and Singita Faru Faru offer guided night drives tailored to spotting elusive nocturnal wildlife — including the aardvark. Patience and luck are key, but the reward is unforgettable.
