As the sun dips below the horizon, a chorus of high-pitched calls echoes across the savanna. The African wild dog — fleet-footed, fiercely loyal, and endlessly resourceful — embarks on the hunt. In East Africa’s wild heart, survival is a symphony of speed, strategy, and social bonds.
The African wild dog, also known as the painted wolf, is one of Africa’s most striking and endangered carnivores. Weighing between 18–36 kg (40-80 lbs) and standing up to 75 cm tall (2½ ft), these canids are instantly recognizable by their mottled coats of black, white, and ochre. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, they thrive in savannas, open woodlands, and grasslands where they roam vast territories in search of prey.
Wild dogs are highly social and live in packs of 10–20, led by a dominant breeding pair. Their cooperative hunting strategy is among the most effective in the animal kingdom, boasting success rates of up to 80%. They chase prey like impala and wildebeest over long distances, relying on endurance and teamwork. Packs share food generously, with pups and weaker members eating first — a rare display of altruism in the wild.
In East Africa, African wild dogs are best seen in Tanzania’s Ruaha and Nyerere National Parks, where sightings are relatively frequent. Kenya’s Laikipia region and the remote corners of the Maasai Mara also offer opportunities. Luxury lodges such as Asilia’s Jabali Ridge in Ruaha, Sand Rivers Selous, and Loisaba Tented Camp in Laikipia provide stylish bases for tracking these elusive predators in their natural habitat.
