About the Boutique Hotel Matlai location
Located on the south eastern side of the island, above the town of Donwe, affords the property more privacy than many of the properties that are located up around Matemwe and Nungwi, on the north of the island.
The beach here is really pretty and the south‑eastern shoreline provides warm, lagoon‑like water for snorkelling among reef fish, starfish and small coral patches, with boat trips offering encounters with green turtles, dolphins, reef sharks and rays. Diving excursions can reach deeper coral gardens where manta rays and seasonal humpback whales may pass offshore. Kayaking and paddle‑boarding are often possible in sheltered conditions, supporting soft‑adventure activities alongside the area’s quiet, romantic atmosphere.
Still, a couple of issues occasionally surface: the intimate villa‑style setup limits shared facilities, and the tidal range restricts swimming for extended periods each day.

Set out around the central, circular swimming pool, each of the 4 rooms has direct ocean views with small balconies. Out to the right (as you look from the sea) is an area that has been set aside for such activities as an outdoor cinema, hammocks and generally lounging while at the back of the property is the main dining area.

One of the really great features of the property is the rooms and the amount of thought and effort that has gone into making them nice and roomy.
Each offers direct views out to the sea with full ceiling to floor French doors and private balcony. Off to the side of each are the open-air bathrooms which feature showers and baths that look out to the sea. Definitely some of the best on the island.
