About the location
Set on a small bay on the north eastern coast of Zanzibar, Pongwe Beach Hotel really benefits from being completely cut off from the rest of the beaches at high and even medium tide. This means that, at certain times of the day, you have a completly private (and outstanding) beach to yourself.
The east‑coast lagoon offers calm, shallow water for snorkelling among reef fish, starfish and small coral patches, while boat trips toward deeper reefs can reveal turtles, reef sharks, rays and seasonal dolphin activity. Kayaking and paddle‑boarding are often possible in sheltered conditions, and diving excursions further offshore provide access to richer coral walls where larger marine species occasionally pass. The quiet bay supports relaxed, romantic exploration with soft‑adventure potential.
On the less positive side, the strong tidal range limits swimming for long periods, and the intimate, low‑key setup may feel too quiet for travellers seeking broader facilities or evening energy.

A logical layout with the beach taking centre stage. In the central area is the covered dining area with the bandas off to the right and the very good pool area to the left. With a good number of sea view rooms, it is, again, what it should be for the money.

Pongwe Beach Hotel Accomodation
Very simple; taking into account that Pongwe doesn’t ask a fortune and that most will spend all their time outside, there is nothing wrong with them, but, for the money, you are paying for the beach and the seclusion of what is effectively a private beach.
The rooms are not offering the bells and whistles of other properties on the island but then the price tag is also not as high.
