At first look, Mnemba Lodge really does offer everything that you can hope for from your beach destination; beautiful blue waters, soft white sand beach, incredible diving, incredible snorkeling, stunning yet simple rooms and the service to match. Erm…and on second look, it still has all of the above!
Located just off Zanzibar’s north eastern coast, the island has the feel of having been dragged across from the Maldives or the Seychelles and is a unique offering along the East African coast…hence the price tag!
The protected waters around Mnemba Atoll offer exceptional snorkelling and diving, with abundant reef fish, sea turtles, rays and, in season, dolphins passing through the deeper channels. The island’s shoreline hosts small antelope, crabs and coastal birds, while the surrounding shallows provide effortless access to coral gardens. Kayaking and guided marine excursions further enhance the wildlife‑focused experience in this conservation‑rich environment.
More critically, the exclusivity comes with very high pricing, and the barefoot‑rustic style may feel less luxurious than expected at this level of cost.
Mnemba Lodge Layout
Loosely focussed around the main seating and dining area, each of the private and secluded “bandas” is nestled into the lush vegetation while retaining direct access onto the stunning beach.
As a simple, but very luxurious, beach property, there are not a whole load of facilities as the island and the diving and snorkelling to be done from it are the main focus.

Mnemba Lodge Accomodation
The rooms are spaced across the island (which takes around 45 mins to walk around) and so you are guaranteed seclusion. They are fairly simple in their look and feel with open fronting to allow the cool breezes and natural beauty of the area in. Combined with natural toiletries of the highest order and great views, they work really well.

Wildlife & Activities at Mnemba Lodge
Mnemba is a pretty simple affair at its heart but the fact that diving and snorkeling are included in the rates gives an indication as to the main drive for activities on the island…don’t be on the island but be exploring the stunning oceanic surrounds!
This being said, anything is possible to arrange including visits to Stone Town and the local markets, spice tours and Jozani Forest…this is presuming you would ever want to leave!
